5ths West Finally Get a Game After Weeks of Rain

Match Date: Saturday 22nd June
Type: Warwickshire County Cricket League Division 13 West
Location: Hollyfields
Report: Darren Yeates, captain

On a warm sunny afternoon at Hollyfields and after 2 weeks of rain, a slightly soft and spongy pitch presented itself at Hollyfields. Olton & West Warwickshire chose to bat, and it proved to be a slow pitch, and with some parts of the outfield not mowed, boundaries were at a premium. At 20 overs (and drinks) OWW had accumulated 71-0 and it was looking like a score over 170 was going to be posted. However some fantastic swing bowling from 12 year old Krish Chauhan (1-11) got the first opener, whilst 12 year old Seb Tibbins (1-21) then took the other opener. Some tight bowling from Milly Freeman, Luke Gillam and Ash Walters, dried up the runs, and the returning Ollie Williams (4-37) then took 4 wickets in 3 overs to put Walmley on the front foot. Wickets for Raj Dadwal and Darrel Tibbins closed out the innings, with the opposition all out for 136.

In reply Walmley started slowly and in calamitous fashion, after 10 overs we had fallen to 17-4, 12 year old Seb Tibbins holding things together another wicket at over 14 and 26-5 brought Yeates to the wicket, and a pressing wedding anniversary meal meant he wasn’t hanging about! Seb and Yeates put on 20 runs, before Seb (11) fell nibbling a wide delivery down leg, bringing another 12 year old to the crease, Krish Chauhan. Together with Yeates, they put on another 31, before Krish (6) fell and Ash Walters then departed first ball and 75-8, next over Yeates (28) was out driving to cover, last man in Ollie Williams was then out caught ending the Walmley innings on 80.

A strong fielding and bowling performance which restricted the visitors to a chaseable score is to be commended, with two U12s, an U13, and two dads in the team. In reply and whilst the pitch was difficult and the opening bowlers for OWW bowled well, a little more discipled batting could (and should) have seen Walmley run the visitors closer than the eventual scoreline achieved. Interestingly though we have the return fixture this weekend and a chance to show our real capabilities…
