The 4ths continued the season on the back of a couple of positive results against one of the stronger sides in our league in Sutton Coldfield.
Upon winning the toss and batting first on the bottom pitch, we raced away thanks to some powerful strokes and a very quick outfield and looking to make another big score first up. But as soon as the first wicket went down, we struggled to stop the fall of wickets as well as keeping the scoreboard moving. A very studious 28 from opener Dhruv Malhi offered some resistance as the wickets fell around him and young George Wyatt chipping in with 23 towards the end of the innings saw us push past 125 and at least get something in terms of bonus points. A poor showing with the bat as we were all out for 129 and giving the opposition 6 extra overs to chase us down.
Their reply was expectedly cautious as they accrued their runs sensibly and without presenting too many chances. A breakthrough was made but with a solid foundation made at the top of the innings and runs ‘running out’, quick wickets were needed. The twin spin of Alex Carey (2-39) and the once more impressive Scott Pepper (3-10) got us in a better position but with 3 wickets remaining, they could afford to be more attacking and finished the game off. The return fixture at Court Lane this week will give us opportunity to make amends!
