Match Date: Sunday 9th June 2019
League: Burton & District Youth Cricket League – Under 13 Division 1
Report: Aditya Muthukumar, U13B
In the beautiful town of Tutbury, at the Tutbury Mill ground, Walmley posted 80-4 in bouncy overcast conditions while our opponent chased it down in 9.5 overs. U12 Kian Eratne top scored for us with 20 runs while Tom Hanlon and Deeyan Patel both provided the finishing boost with 14 apiece. Tutbury’s county opener Saif Afsak scored 42*, finishing the game off for his team. The so far unbeaten Tutbury continued their winning momentum with a total of 7 wins while 2nd-on-the-table Walmley conceded their first loss of the season.
Our team began with a slow start against their accurate opening bowlers. Captain Michael Shackleford departed for 6, trying to up the ante while other opener Kian scored a hard-earned 20. U12 Yousuf Akbar brilliantly combated some fiery chin music (excessive use of bouncers) by Cameron Tamber with some clever shots. He was unfortunately caught at cow corner, attempting the pull shot. Josh Chagar then gave us some quick runs before being dismissed by a peach by Cameron, with his delivery just clipping the off stump bail. Tom Hanlon and Deeyan Patel then combined to provide the team with the finishing touches to take Walmley to a slightly below-par 80-4 due to the very difficult conditions.
The weather gods turned kind to Tutbury as the sun shone over the 2nd innings. Saif Afsak and Cameron Tamber gave their side a good start, picking up quick singles. Josh Chagar dropped a catch but that turned out to be a blessing in disguise as the batters thought about another run but a great throw by Josh and good awareness by bowler Kian gave us our 1st wicket. Oliver Stretch then combined with top scorer Saif to get the job done. A special mention must go to Kian Eratne who exhibited some fantastic fielding at cover, preventing easy 1s.
The U13Bs play Handsworth CC in the return game of the Warwickshire Youth Cricket Leagues – U13 League (Group 2) on Thursday at the Douglas Ground and revisit this league on Sunday playing Alrewas at home against whom we comprehensively won earlier this year.
