Match Date: 31st July 2020
Cloudy skies greeted us at Rectory Park after a gloriously sunny afternoon for a game of cricket. Walmley U14 Kites competed in their second friendly of the season against Sutton Coldfield’s U13. After winning the toss and electing to bat, Walmley posted a par-117-6, bolstered by the openers Kian Eratne and Michael Shackleford’s fabulous scores. Early wickets put Sutton on the back foot but a solid partnership by Ewan Hay and Harry Baker was in vain as Sutton only managed to score 103 for the loss of 9 wickets.
Batting first for the 2nd time in a row, openers Kian and Michael batted superbly putting on a partnership over 50. Kian retired after amassing 33 off 39 and Michael was bowled just 4 short of his retirement on 26. Wickets continued as Shlok Mehta was bowled for 13 after striking 3 fours by offspinner Jay Somal who also had Deeyan Patel caught for 4 two overs later. Josh Chagar and Reuben Majithia also departing quickly, Ben Carruthers and Connor Kuhn salvaged a small but effective partnership, Ben hitting 2 fours and the first six of the season in his quickfire 17 of 13. The innings finished with 2 byes as Walmley posted 117, a defendable score.
The innings started off in a remarkable fashion as Adi Muthukumar bowled a wicket maiden to get things running. Reuben also picked up 2 more wickets quickly, leaving Sutton 33-3. Wickets continued as Ben took 2 in the 7th over, including that of opener Daniel Wright after making 24. Ethan Walcott was also run out by Adi for 6. Harry Baker and Ewan Hay then kept Walmley at bay sharing a partnership that kept them in the hunt, the alliance broke by an unfortunate runout. Ewan Hay also retired shortly after an excellent 30. Connor Kuhn’s economic bowling, along with Adi and Reuben’s death bowling meant that Sutton weren’t able to get the boundaries they desperately needed and finished on 103-9, despite Ewan coming back in the final over. An entertaining game encompassing elegant shots, clever bowling and sharp fielding – a remarkable way to end the day as the skies began closing up shop.
After winning 2 on the trot, the Kites now have another friendly at home on Court Lane against Ambleside on Thursday, August 6 followed by a busy week full of matches.
