Convincing Win for Sunday 1sts

Sunday 9th August

Sunday 1s played against Shirley and late nights followed by another hot day made it a necessity to bat first. Jamie Hall’s run of good luck continued as he lost the toss yet got told to bat first.

A flying start, mainly thanks to opener Sachin Dubb. An aggressive innings; sending the ball back over the bowler’s head and back foot pulls immediately put Shirley on the back foot who then took a defensive approach. That didn’t stop him. Still scoring at a quick rate, Sachin eased past 50 and continued to manipulate the ball as well as scoring the boundaries. Unfortunately getting hit on the back pad, Callum gave the finger and Sachin was out for 77. A great start was continued from the Saturday 1st team players as skipper Jamie (25) and Jono Newis (38) ran hard between the wickets as well as finding the boundary. Early in Jono’s innings was a front foot punch travelling straight back down the ground for 4. Let’s just say the bowler wasn’t too happy with that. This was then followed up by Peter Shackleford (23) and Callum Herron (27) who kept the pressure on Shirley allowing us to finish on 257 after 40 overs.

A hot day made it hard for our bowlers to bowl as well as they normally do, however, three wickets picked up by opening bowlers Peter Shackleford (1-33) and Max Southgate (2-34) kept us in the game. Approaching drinks, Walmley struggled to get the 4th wicket and the partnership needed to be broken. It wasn’t until after drinks and a change of bowlers did we manage to get a breakthrough. Dinuk de Silva, with his leg spin and the occasional googly, was too hard for the batsmen to play and thus, a quick collapse of wickets (3-25). Yusuf Khalil also bowled well on the other end (3-39) and the game was soon wrapped up as Shirley was all out for 188. Two wins in a row for the boys and hoping for another next week (if the weather holds up).
