Saturday 2nd August
At Eldon Drive on Saturday, the new 2nd XI skipper Dan Bromley lost the toss and an older than usual Harborne 2nd XI elected to have a bat.
On a very decent batting track, Harborne got off to a strong start but a downpour, causing a 30 minute break, stalled their momentum. The game was now reduced to 39 overs per side and the Walmley spinners, Shailan Srikanthan (2-30), Max Southgate (3-52) and Sinel Gunarathne (1-32), pegged back the scoring rate. A total of 218 seemed about par and a revised Duckworth/Lewis target of 228 seemed reachable.
A reasonable start to the chase after the run out of Alex Gower (7) saw Sinel (41) and Dan Bromley (34) keep us on track. But an all too familiar middle order collapse left us floundering. There was an excellent late flurry from Lewis Hoffman (18) and Max Southgate (28) but, in truth, the game was up and the demands of the scoring rate were now too much. We finished on 184-9 and a disappointing 43 run loss.
