Match Date: 30 August 2020
We encountered chilly weather and a damp outfield on Old Church in south Birmingham as Harborne CC faced off against Walmley CC’s U14 Kites. After picking the right side of the coin and choosing to bat, Walmley put a good total on the board on what was an inconsistent pitch with Tom Hanlon and Reuben Majithia being the stars of the show. A target to chase, Harborne never really got going and ended up with 95 with Sully scoring 28.
After a string of cancelled matches, Walmley finally managed to get the ball rolling as they opened with Kian Eratne and Tom Hanlon. Runs flowed as the openers put on 31 in 4 overs. Jacob then provided a breakthrough as he dismissed Kian of a loopy delivery for 2. Tom Hanlon kept going despite the setback and finished with an excellent 35 comprising 6 fours and 1 six, much to his delight after his previous 3 opening attempts all ended in noughts (his own words!). His batting partner Aqsa Akhtar departed for 14 while Reuben Majithia also batted well and scored a solid 30 (retired). The wicket began to slow down as Walmley ended up with 128, a decent total.
Harborne’s reply was slow to start off as Walmley’s opening pair of Adi Muthukumar and Edward Bickley kept things at bay, only conceding 14 runs in the first 5 overs including a maiden from Adi. The run flow continued to be stemmed as captain Josh Chagar picked up opener Dhanvin lbw for 9. Aaryan retired hurt after a blow on the shoulder for 4 to applause from the spectators. Everyone was given a bowl as Sully built a patient, hard-fought 28 and was caught for 28, just 2 short of a worthy retirement. Left-handed Charlie hit 3 fours and a six in a quickfire 19 off just 8 balls before being dismissed through a difficult high catch by Reuben. Harborne finished with 95 as a result of Walmley tight fielding and bowling, allowing the stand-in captain Josh Chagar to maintain his 100% win record.
Should the team manager manage to arrange it, the Kites will compete in the season finale next Sunday against the same opposition. Until then, take care and I hope you enjoyed reading!
