Ambleside vs Walmley 5ths East
Match Date: 13th July 2019
Type: Warwickshire County Cricket League Division 13 East
Report: Darren Yeates, Captain
On an overcast day, Walmley had the reverse fixture of last week’s game, away at Ambleside. With a much changed side due mainly to holiday commitments, Walmley lost the toss and were asked to bat. Ram (23) and Viren Malhi (13) put on 40 for the first wicket in 10 overs before both fell in consecutive overs to leave us 40-2. Siddikur Rahman (5) and Dhruv Malhi then went about rebuilding the innings and on a slow track runs became harder to come by. When Siddikur fell at 58-3 the game was finely balanced, but an outstanding partnership of 57 between Asif Khan and Dhruv started to put Walmley in the ascendency, Dhruv’s solid contribution of 33 was excellent. Another fine partnership then ensued as Charlie Yeates joined Asif and they put on another 57 runs at almost a run ball, with some fine running between the wickets before Asif (47) fell agonisingly close to his half century (another week, another nearly score). A short cameo at the end from Captain Yeates senior saw father and son at the crease for the first time this season, before Yeates senior ran out junior (33) with 2 balls remaining – tea was interesting….
After tea, the Walmley start was swift – a wicket first over for Andi Walters with a sharp catch behind the stumps was the start of a fantastic day for him. This was quickly followed by a wicket for Charlie Yeates (1-10), and another for Andi shortly after had the opposition 8-3 off 6 overs… Ambleside’s captain entered and played a few shots early on, and started to look comfortable before a stunning caught and bowled from Andi Walters, saw him diving full length to his left to take an unbelievable chance just above the ground and leave the hosts, and his teammates, gobsmacked and astounded.
After this wicket, it was clear the hosts were then going to play the long game and bat as long as possible, and a fine spell of bowling from Subbu (6-3-6-0) didn’t get a wicket he deserved. A game of attrition ensued, with very few shots being played and as the overs ticked by Ambleside approached drinks only 4 down, before Shayaan Tahir (6-0-16-1) broke the partnership at the halfway stage. A wicket for Viren was followed by the return of Andi Walters supported by the very economical Sami Hamid (9-3-13-2). Andi added to his earlier wickets finishing with a superb 9-1-40-5, the first 5fer in 25 years, and a man of the match performance complemented by his super fielding at cover.
