As we look back at this year, it is with sadness that we remember those to whom we have said our last goodbyes, both old friends and new: Don Marsh, scorer and treasurer for Walmley Ladies, Ken Hoffman, life member, and Toni Nash who joined us recently when she moved into Eldon Drive because of her love of cricket.
The year started off well with the club winning the Sutton Coldfield Sports Awards. Indoor cricket began and darts, football and basketball continued until everything shut down in March. With the club closed, work began to improve the club house including creating a new members bar. Football and cricket group training was allowed to restart in June.
On July 4th, the refurbished club house was allowed to reopen. The refurbishment was possible, in part, to a generous legacy from Chris Platt, former 1st team scorer. After a busy summer, imposed earlier closing times, table only service and masks, the government brought everything to a standstill at the beginning of November. Unfortunately, after the three week national lockdown, the club was not able to reopen again for the rest of the year.
Mini League and youth cricket was condensed into a shorter period during the summer, and Senior Cricket took place in local leagues. We were able to field 5 senior teams on a Saturdays, and 3 on Sundays, as there was no Women’s league this year. The season also continued well into September. October saw some indoor training resume, but that was stopped due to the national lockdown.
September also saw the merging of Walmley Football Club and Colron Football Club, with 16 teams from under 7s to under 16s. With the success of the Saturday Football School and the Wildcat Girls Football, we look forward to new teams starting up in 2021.
In December, the Champions Soccer Academy received old kit and boots donated by Walmley Colron players, and Walmley Cricket & Sports Club made the decision to form a link with CSA in order to provide more support.
Darts and basketball are yet to restart.
Thank You And Happy New Year
We would like to thank all our members, friends and sponsors for their support over this difficult year.
We wish you all a happy and healthy 2021 and look forward to when we can get together again.
