The Sunday 1st XI travelled to Bromsgrove for what was potentially a league decider. With Bromsgrove 1 point ahead at the top of the table, a win for Walmley would put the race for the title back in our hands.
Jono (Jon Newis) won the toss and took the ‘mandatory’ Sunday decision to bat. Most of our batsmen got in but failed to go on (Callum Herron 7, Peter Shackleford 12, Dan Bevan 18, Paddy Woods 18 and Jamie Hall 20) but the stand out knock was from captain Jono who played a superb innings of 115.
He was supported for the second part of his innings by Mikey Waugh with 42. Dinuk de Silva (3*) and Max Southgate (10*) finished off the overs and we reached 247-7 from our 40 overs.
Bromsgrove came out aggressively and kept up with the rate. A Waugh opening bowling partnership saw Mikey keep it tight bowling his seam up whilst Duncan (8-2-43-1) got a bit of tap. They both picked up a wicket though and the introduction of spin saw a strangle of the run rate. The Bromsgrove 3rd and 4th wicket partnerships were the key and once these were broken by Dinuk de Silva and Max Southgate, the game gradually fell into Walmey’s hands. Excellent spells by Kiefer Woods (8-0-40-1) and Max Southgate (8-0-1-49) in the middle overs and Dinuk de Silva (8-0-30-1) and Mikey Waugh (8-0-18-1) came back to finish the game off.
A 9 point lead at the top of the table means that we need to win our last game at Leamington on September 1st and we will win the Arden Premier league title. This would a fitting reward for Jono’s fantastic work and commitment leading this side.
