Match Report: Fillongley 3rds vs Saturday 5ths East

Match Date: Saturday 4th May
Type: Warwickshire County Cricket League Division 13 East
Location: Meriden
Report: Darren Yeates, captain

Walmley fielded possibly their youngest side ever, away to Fillongley thirds, with a mix of players from the under 12s, 14s, 15s and 3 “adults”. We were met with an Astro wicket, quite short boundaries, but slow outfield and a delayed start as the home side forgot to bring stumps… but still we won the toss and opted to bowl first.

Fillongley looked to play their shots early, but some excellent bowling from Viren Malhi and Charlie Yeates saw a wicket apiece and the host 25-2 after 7 overs. A tidy spell from 12 yo Shayaan unfortunately came with little reward, with 2 dropped catches, whilst at the other end Rajveer Chauhan’s leggies were causing some mischief but again for no reward.

The introduction of Bastian Augustesen brought a wicket first ball and rather than our luck changing, it brought their captain to the wicket who was unforgiving for the rest of the innings (133 no). With contributions from Harshit Champaneria, Yousuf Akbar and Dhruv Malhi all the youngsters got a bowl, the only other wicket coming at the end with Charlie Yeates taking a caught and bowled to finish with 39-2 off 9.

The hosts set us a mammoth target of 304 to win. With Captain Yeates out 3rd ball, Siddikur Rahman 5th ball, we were 2-2 at the end of the first over, with 12 year old Yousuf and 14 year old Rajveer batting to get us out of trouble – what a masterclass we witnessed with both of them batting maturely, in a partnership worth 82 runs in 30 overs. Yousuf was first to go for 35, Rajveer a couple of overs later for 38, but it left us in sight of a losing draw and aiming for 125 runs for a batting bonus point….

With the runs drying up, it was up to Dave Morley to try and drive the score on, his demise trying to accelerate the run rate, saw Viren join younger brother Dhruv at the wicket and Viren’s 13 runs in 8 balls saw us safely past the target and onto 134-5.

A fantastic performance from such a young team, standout performances from Raj and Yousuf with the bat showing real strength of character with special mention to Charlie and Viren stepping up to open and close the innings with the ball.

To Yousuf, Dhruv, Shayaan, Harshit and Rajveer, welcome to adult cricket and what a great contribution to our losing draw.
