4ths played their first league game away to Kings Heath 3rd XI taking out a very young side (Average age of 14). Won the toss and elected to bowl first. Some great bowling on display from everyone. Jay Martin got off to a shaky start but quickly found his rhythm and ended up being the pick of the bowlers with 3 for 41 of his 11. The bowling throughout the first innings continued to impress however it became clear very early on that their umpires had no interest of giving any LBW’s away. Our bowlers however, did the very mature thing and continued on with the game with myself, Farhan Choudhry and Devin Fernando picking up 1 wicket each and Sam Lumb with 2 wickets for 37 off his 7 overs.
Unfortunately, the bowling was not backed up by the fielding with an embarrassingly large number of catches dropped in the field (only 4 of the possible 11 or so being taken). This helped their batsmen set a target of 231 off their 45 overs.
Batting proved to be difficult on an incredibly slow wicket and our wickets kept tumbling. A valiant stand by David Clough (35), and a quick fire 18 from Masud Ahmed were the only notable scores in our innings. We were bowled out in the end for 116.
Not a great start for the 4ths, Walmley could have restricted the oppositions score by a huge margin if fielding standards were what they should have been. A lot of work is needed to be done for the remainder of the league.
