Match Date: Saturday 25th May
Type: Warwickshire County Cricket League Division 13 East
Report: Darren Yeates, captain
On a warm sunny afternoon at the Douglas, Walmley entertained Willow 1sts.
Winning the toss the visitors elected to bat, and some extremely tight bowling from Doc Ellis and Charlie Yeates restricted the visitors to just 26 runs in the first 11 overs.
As the batsmen struggled to score they started to take some risks running between the wickets, Walmley missed the chance of a couple of run outs, after which the visitors settled. A lack of control from Walmley’s other senior bowlers, aligned to some relatively young bowling support, saw the opposition in the ascendency for the middle overs (adding 160 in the next 24 overs) the only wickets falling to Hamzah Swaleh & Seb Timmins (a solid 5 overs of off spin). Walmley fielded excellently, but with the visitors scoring boundaries off every bad ball, it took the return of Doc (1-19) and Charlie Yeates (2-37) to take additional wickets as the visitors tried to push the score. Special mention to 12 year old Shayaan Tahir whose 8 overs 1-37 of leg spin showed a maturity beyond his years. The last 11 overs went for 51 runs eventually limiting the visitors to 237-6
Walmley’s reply started slowly, as the opposition started with their slow bowlers, whose “loopy slow balls” brought some erratic bounce from the pitch, a grubber catching out Henry Nevitt on the back foot (bowled), whilst others didn’t adjust to the slow conditions with repeated catches offered to mid-off, mid-on and midwicket – the uneven bounce taking care of the rest and seeing Walmley all out for 75, the only bright spot being 35 for Siddikur Rahman.
An improvement required next week…
