A very youthful side took to the field against Harborne at Court Lane. After enduring the bowler’s wrath and the residents telling us where we can and cannot park (and all I was doing was trying to direct the traffic) I lost the toss and we were put into bat.
Dhruv Malhi and Shayaan Tahir opened and both in the shadow of the wicket keeper’s chest! Yes, Harborne had fully manned up and meant business. An unspectacular but steady start got the scoreboard moving, however, the tight bowling of Harborne tied us down from making a large score. Indeed, wickets fell regularly and really only Michael Shackleford shone with 43 not out (giving him a 76 not out for the day after the morning’s game too).
We spent an age in the 70’s, raced through the 80’s and 90’s and end with a total of 122.
We opened the bowling and a ray of sunshine came with Yohan Mudalige getting the opener in the first over. However, the next two obviously had been playing for a number of years and their strength in hitting a cricket ball showed as they motored to our total.
We did not do ourselves any favours with some poor fielding, not helped by the power of the ball being dispatched, which on a Sunday afternoon seniors’ game is a different proposition to junior cricket matches.
Yohan took a second wicket bowled and I took a caught and bowled as our successes, but by the 23rd over Harborne were at the finishing line and we were done for. All that was left was to try and find the keys (the bowlers had taken) to lock up and go home!
