Match Date: Sunday 30th June
Type: Burton & District Youth Cricket League – Under 13 Division 1
Location: Vicarage Lane
Report: Aditya Muthukumar
After a disappointing batting performance by the team’s high standards, the team had to “bowl and field out of our skins” to defend a below-par 84. But, the team delivered exactly what the doctor ordered. With fabulous bowling spells by Josh Chagar and Toby Stokes after Michael Shackleford was the mainstay with a calm and composed 29, Walmley won against a competitive Whittington side for the 2nd time in a row (click here to see the report of the 1st triumph). However, Ella Crane gave Walmley a scare with an excellent 30 while Matthew Tooley and Rohin Talafair starred with the ball with 3 wickets apiece.
Matthew Tooley struck the first blow as Will Priddey departed for 4. With Sebastian Jones dismissed by a beauty early in his innings and Zebedee Batchelor caught behind, Walmley had a wobble at the start. Josh then struck a six and four but followed suit for 11. Ben Carruthers was then run out and Luke Proctor bowled by Rohin Talafair which left Walmley reeling. Hugo Kelly and Amy Carey brought some calm to the innings and formed decent partnerships with skipper and opener Michael who hadn’t given his wicket away yet. Hugo was then caught and bowled by Rohin before he picked up another as Amy was dismissed. Adi Muthukumar then walked out to bat to join Michael who was finally dislodged courtesy a very good delivery by Matthew Tooley to end a wonderful knock by the captain. Toby was the last man out as the team folded for 84 all out.
Ella Crane and Ben Patterson gave our opposition a good start before a hit-me ball was slammed to Michael at cover who held onto a great catch, allowing Toby Stokes to jump to the top of the leading wicket-takers this season for Walmley U13Bs just ahead of Adi on 7 wickets. Josh Chagar then picked up his first by getting Jack Yeomans for nought. Matthew Tooley and Josh Butler also succumbed to Josh’s fast left-arm round pace. Ella Crane kept her team in the hunt at the other end and we needed to get her out to close out the match. And the man of the moment, playing with a bruise on his arm, Toby cleaned up the county player with a slower variation to knock her middle stump out. Ella departed after playing a brilliant 30 off 25 with four 4s. Josh then took his 4th wicket before the opening bowlers returned to put the last nails in the coffin to round up an incredible day.
Walmley U13B start the month on Wednesday against Four Oaks Saints CC before contesting against Draycott and Hanbury CC in a bid to win against them again.
Summary: Walmley CC 84 all out (Michael Shackleford 27, Rohin Talafair 3-19, Matthew Tooley 3-20) win against Whittington CC 73 all out(Ella Crane 30, Josh Chagar 4-16, Toby Stokes 3-16)
