Type: Warwickshire County Cricket League T20 Cup Band A
Match Report: Sarah Norell
On a sunny evening at Rectory Park, Walmley captain Mikey Waugh won the toss and elected to bat. Walmley got off to a shaky start losing their first wicket on the fourth ball of the match. However things then turned in Walmley’s favour with Ricky Gordon hitting a spectacular 50 in just 21 balls with 9 fours and a six before being bowled off the first ball of the 6th over with the score on a healthy 60-2 off 5.1.
Jon Newis then joined Mikey Waugh at the crease, both scoring steadily to put on 59 before Newis (26) lofted one into the capable hands of captain Lee Thomason in the 14th over. Waugh finished on 38, Padraig Woods contributed 16 off 10, Rob Hutchings 11 off 9 to take the total onto 172 off their 20 overs. The pick of Sutton’s bowlers was Jack Smith with 3 for 24 off 4.
Sutton needed a run rate of 8.65 to claim victory.
Fahim Jan opened the bowling taking yet another wicket in the first over of an innings. Gordon took the other end and not to be outdone, also took a wicket in his first over. Sutton were 1 for 2.
Both opening bowlers finished their two over spells on 1 for 8. With the total on 20-2 off four overs, the required run rate had increased to over 10 an over. It wasn’t looking good for Sutton.
Jamie Hall came on next, taking a wicket in his first over, bringing in Dinushka Nawarathnage who attempted to push the score along as his partners came and went. Jack Smith scored a useful 16 off 12 before falling to Hutchings in his first over. Hall took another wicket to finish on 2 for 29 off 3, and Hutchings 1 for 9 off 2. The wickets continued to tumble with Mikey Waugh also taking a wicket in his first over leaving Sutton floundering on 60-6 off 9.3 overs.
Kiefer Woods came on next and broke the trend by waiting until his second over, a wicket maiden, to bowl the Sutton overseas Dinushka Nawarathnage on 30 off 19.
The writing was on the wall as the remaining batsmen crumbled to the bowling of Waugh. Sutton’s innings ended on 82 all out off 15.1 overs. Woods finished with a tidy 3-1-12-1 and Waugh an impressive 3.1-0-12-4.
An impressive win by Walmley to take them through to the next round of the cup.
