Match Date: Saturday 27th April
Type: Warwickshire County Cricket League
Location: Rectory Park
Report: Michael Waugh, captain Saturday 1sts
This week the first XI were away at Rectory Park facing local rivals Sutton. Winning the toss Walmley asked Sutton to bat first and went out to field in some brutally cold conditions. We started well keeping it tight early and testing out the Sutton openers. Fahim Jan took 2 wickets in his opening spell and Roshan Bhalaji also took 2 meaning Sutton were reduced to 29-4. This is where Sutton put together a good partnership taking them all the way to 154-5. Jon Newis coming on and bowling well at the end taking 3 wickets and pegging them back slightly meant they finished up on 203-9. Challenging fielding conditions and dropped catches cost us dearly and meant they scored 30 or 40 more runs than they should have.
In reply our we lost an early wicket and unfortunately Mo Sheikh had to retire hurt. Roshan and Sammy Bhatti came together and grafted hard in challenging wet conditions and took us to 62-2 when Roshan fell. This is the point that at 20 overs the umpires decided to take us off for rain. Unfortunately we were not able to get back on to play which meant we were left with a losing draw. A disappointing result as we felt we were in the box seat to try and chase down the total on a good pitch. Still positives to take from this performance and we will go again next week at Coventry and North Warwickshire.
