Top class batting puts Walmley U15B into semis

After conceding a challenging 146 against Trentside CC in the Burton & District Youth Cricket League Cup Quarterfinal, Walmley’s batsmen were more than up to the task, chasing it down with 16 balls to spare with Reiss Chagar, Harry Wyatt and Ben Carruthers all being the main run-getters.

After electing to bat, Trentside hit 9 off the first over before Adi Muthukumar took 2 back-to-back wickets, knocking over the middle stump on both occasions in the 3rd over. Opener Bobby Bower-Smith kept marching on, hitting 7 fours to all parts of the ground. Ellie Phillips picked up H Hussain for 12 which brought Muhammad Farooq to the crease. He along with Asten Metcalfe continued to deal in boundaries before Josh Chagar dismissed Asten Metcalfe for 24. Furqan Rana hit a couple of fours to finish off the innings with a total of 146, a good use of the batting friendly pitch.

A large target to chase, Harry Wyatt and Tom Hanlon got the scoreboard ticking in no time, hitting 29 in the first 4 overs. Muhammad Farooq then took a lucky caught & bowled to dismiss Tom. Harry Wyatt hit a few more boundaries from the other end before top-edging on 36, 4 short of a worthy retirement. With Will Priddey also being caught and captain Michael Shackleford bowled soon after, a partnership had to be forged. Ben Carruthers and Reiss Chagar did just that, putting on a wonderful 74 run partnership, full of fantastic shots. Reiss ended up with 7 fours in a wellmade 41 and Ben amassed his highest for Walmley with 31, including hitting the winning runs.

Walmley U15Bs now play Smethwick CC at home tomorrow (Thursday), Four Oaks Saints on Sunday and will face Tutbury CC in the semifinal in a few weeks’ time.

Trentside CC 146-5 (Bobby Bower-Smith 40, Muhammad Farooq 32, Aditya Muthukumar 2-26) lost to Walmley CC 150-4 (Reiss Chagar 41*, Harry Wyatt 36, Zach Barnes 2-31)
