Saturday 25th July
A short trip to Castle Bromwich saw the 4ths turn up in a downpour which looked like making the day even shorter. Thankfully, with proper covers and a very quick drying outfield, we started on time and upon losing the toss, surprisingly we went out to field.
The threat of more rain never materialised and we got off to a very controlled start, keeping the run rate down and getting a couple of early wickets. Their number 4 then decided the score wasn’t good enough and proceeded to hit the ball to all parts of the ground which was ended by a caught behind off Doc Ellis’s bowling. As they started to take more risks, there were more runs and also more chances and wickets with Yohan Mudalige (4-37) the pick of the bowlers. Alex Carey (2-30) holding an end down with control as well. Castle Brom posted 239-9 off their 40.
Our reply was somewhat similar in terms of not scoring very quickly and once our openers had negotiated the first 10 without loss, things started to come together although we very rarely looked like troubling their score. Our 4th wicket partnership was the highlight of our innings as Greg Rushton (20) and Reiss Chagar (44) gave us a great foundation to see out our overs, which was completed by debutant George Wyatt and draw specialist Alex Carey. We finished 149-8 and with a losing draw.
