Walmley 4ths vs Four Oaks Saints 3rds @ Court Lane
Saturday 18 July 2020
The first competitive game of the season saw us play some familiar opponents at Court Lane.
The wicket looked in great shape so upon winning the toss, we sought to put some runs on the board first off. Our opening pair started off in a solid fashion even if not in total control, adding runs and generally dealing with some good bowling, but once they were out, the runs dried up very quickly and we allowed their bowlers to get on top and it pretty much stayed that way with runs hard to come by.
A debut for young Amarni Anwar (24) saw him top score whilst also facing the most balls by far (77) but unfortunately no one could hang around long enough with him to build a meaningful partnership.
We totalled 101 off 37.2 overs from our 40 overs.
Their reply got off to a good start with a few too many extras but Luke Marshall (1-14) and Rob Ellis (1-22) removing the top order before undoubtedly the star of the day Amarni Anwar (3-7) swung his way to excellent figures, which included a fantastic catch from Amaan Nasar at gully to give Amarni his first senior wicket. 5 down but with so little runs to play with, it was a very tough ask to put them under real pressure. And it shows that if you don’t put the runs on the board first off on a batting wicket, you’ll pay the price. Lesson learned. Hopefully.
