Last year our Under 15’s were crowned ECB National Champions at Rugby School – the first time ever a Walmley boys’ side had achieved a national win. In reflecting on this achievement myself and a couple of the parents thought there should be a way to recognise it and so the idea of a tour commenced. Spring forward 15 months later and this coming Saturday 14 boys will be departing Gatwick for a week in Barbados and Walmley’s first-ever overseas tour – ten of the squad who won the national title will be part of the group.
The last 12 months has seen a number of activities to make this happen – in addition to the organising, a fundraising committee was set up and amongst the events were cake sales, a car wash at Sutton Fire Station and a bag pack at Asda.
My personal thanks goes to Jitna Majithia and her company AKAI for their kind sponsorship of the tour kit and to Sportology for organising it. We also now have ten of the boys’ parents coming over for the tour, too – clearly, it was the cricket that was the deciding factor! I am sure the lads are also delighted that most of them will have their parents around too!
The tour will see five games of cricket – 2 x T20, 2 x 50 over and 1 x 40 over against three local schools and one local club plus the opportunity to take in some of the local attractions including a catamaran trip around the island and a desert jeep safari as well as visits to Bridgetown and Kensington Oval.
Walmley CC Under 17 tour is proud to be sponsored by AKAI – for further information visit their website https://www.akaitv.co.uk/.
