Walmley U11s through to the Semi Final of the Burton Pairs Cup

June 7th 2022

Walmley faced a strong Rollaston team which boasted Derbyshire county players and a strong bowling line up. Rollaston had proven to be Walmley’s nemesis last season, playing them four times and never beating them in a series of close games.

Bryan won the toss and elected to bowl. The Rollaston opening pair came out of the traps ferociously and began to score at a good rate before being pegged back by a Kanav wicket in the 4th over.

The 5th over saw two sharp run outs from the Walmley boys, which negated the strong Rollaston start to their innings. Tight bowling against the third Rollaston pair including a wicket for Daniel blunted the Rollaston innings further.

Despite a valiant effort from the final Rollaston pair, wickets from Bryan and another for Daniel saw them post 216-6 with wickets for Kanav, Bryan and two wickets for Daniel. Aarav’s two run outs topped another good performance behind the stumps in which only 3 byes and 3 leg byes were conceded.

216-6 the final score for Rollaston.

Walmley took to the crease and it would prove to be one of the most disciplined and mature batting displays of the season. Freddie and Aarav set the tone as the opening pair. Facing some tricky bowling they posted 20 runs in their 4 overs for no wicket.

The second pair of Daniel and Umer, inspired by their contemporaries efforts, posted a further 18 runs onto the total without loss and the Rollaston field began to spread.

The game was slipping away from Rollaston and as has been the case many times so far this season, Walmley continued ruthlessly. Raheel and Kanav came together to add further runs to Walmley’s growing tally, but Raheel fell victim to an excellent delivery from Rollaston’s Jack. Walmley were 249-1 after 12 overs.

Walmley’s final pair of Ariyan and Bryan are so often used to the pressure of a tight and thrilling run chase. The opening 3 batting pairs had taken that pressure off and in the absence of this they batted selflessly and with restraint to ensure Walmley crossed the line without further loss. Bryan (having faced only two balls) emerged not out without scoring and Ariyan scored 10*.

Walmley posted 266-1 and won by 50 runs. They face either Whittington or Uttoxeter in the semi finals of the Burton Pairs U11 cup.
