Match Date: Sunday 19th May
League: Burton & District Youth Cricket League – Under 13 Division 1
Report: Aditya Muthukumar, U13B
Josh Chagar defends 15 off the last over as Walmley add 5 more points to their tally in this away game on Sunday. A strong partnership for almost 10 overs by Adi Muthukumar and Josh C was the backbone of a fantastic 152-7. With some good fielding, effective bowling and some clever work behind the stumps by Michael Shackleford, we managed to keep Trentside down to 147 on a very good batting pitch.
Trentside’s Thomas Malkin kicked the innings off with some rapid pace giving away over 10 byes. Zebedee Batchelor departed in the 8th over. Michael then started finding the boundaries before retiring on 42, his highest ever score for Walmley. Reuben Majithia left soon after attempting a slog sweep against left-arm spinner Razan. Josh C and Adi then batted for a long period of time, hitting boundaries regularly. Adi was run out at the striker’s end as he was ball-watching a high-top edge after scoring 19 off 29 balls, his highest score for Walmley. Josh C was dismissed for 30 after which Connor Kuhn followed. Luke Douglas finished the innings off with a cracking shot straight down the ground off the final ball to take the team’s score to a healthy 152. We knew it was a only a par score because of the supreme quality of the batting-friendly square.
Our opposition got off to a good start. The first wicket fell in a brilliant piece of keeping by Michael. The batsman, Thomas Malkin had just played and missed a delivery by Reuben Majithia and was tapping his foot continually on the floor. Displaying incredible awareness, wicket keeper Michael stumped him out in the nick of time and the square leg umpire deemed it out. The other opener was finally dismissed by Toby Stokes on 32. After quite an expensive start to the 18th over by Adi, he dismissed Lily Grace Doyle with an in swinging yorker. Toby then bowled an exceptional 19th over, taking a wicket (stumping) and leaving Josh C 13 runs to defend. Josh started off the over with two 2s and a single. When the equation was 8 for 2, he gave a slight scare to the team with him bowling 2 consecutive wides. But he stayed calm, cool and collected to cap off the game with 2 dots, granting us 5 valuable points to be positioned just behind Tutbury on the table.
Tomorrow Walmley U13B play Handsworth CC in an attempt to leap to the top of the table and then have a 12-day break before revisiting this league in two Sundays.
Summary: Walmley CC 152-7 (Michael Shackleford 42*, Josh Chagar 30, Bobby Bower-Smith 2-8) win over Trentside CC 147-6 (Bobby Bower-Smith 40*, Hamaad Hussain 32, Toby Stokes 2-13)
