Walmley CC – Under 13B vs Whittington CC, Staffs – Under 13
Match Date: Sunday 5th May
Type: Burton & District Youth Cricket League – Under 13 Division 1
Report: Aditya Muthukumar
A fabulous bowling performance backed up with some good lower order batting gave Walmley their 2nd win of the season as they go to the top of the table. Everyone contributed to the bowling while there was also some great fielding on display. Our top order fell quickly but some gritty batting by Noah and supporting roles by Adi and Edward helped us chase the target down.
Josh and Adi gave us the first 2 wickets to put Whittington under pressure straightaway (11-2) with Zeb pulling off a fantastic catch at mid-on, running backwards attempting to catch a ball that went high in the air off Josh. A strong 3rd wicket partnership followed between the Whittington’s Jack and Jonathan. But, Krish Chauhan broke the partnership just after the halfway stage and again proving the cricketing saying ‘1 brings 2’, Krish completed a caught and bowled. This sparked a collapse with Adi, Ed and Noah picking 3 quick wickets before Zeb cleaned up the tail of the 10-man team with back-to-back wickets – this means he’s on a hat trick next match! With a total of 23 extras, Whittington posted a below-par 71 in 17.3 overs. Special mentions must go to part-time keeper Toby who kept brilliantly in the tough circumstances to fulfil his keeping duties today.
Without usual openers, Billy, Millie or Michael, the team’s top order shook slightly with skipper Tom departing early off an excellent first delivery and Caspar being unfortunately run out at the striker’s end going for a single, the team was in desperate need of a partnership. Josh and Thara scored 9 apiece while U12 Krish was caught and bowled. Noah and Adi both had a solid partnership before leg spinner Rohan dismissed the latter with a beauty. Shayaan lasted 11 balls for his 2 while Edward finished things off with a top score of 11*. The Whittington bowlers put on a decent show with them giving away 22 extras and some of their bowlers being a touch expensive. Their standout bowler was leg spinner Rohan who gave a lot of air into his balls and bowled 4 overs, conceding 10 runs, taking 2 wickets and also bowling a maiden.
Tomorrow Walmley plays Highcroft and Great Barr CC in the first game of the Warwickshire Youth Cricket Leagues – U13 League (Group 2) 2019.
Summary: Whittington 71-8(Jonathan Senior 26, Adi 2-1, Krish 2-6) lose to Walmley 72-8 (Edward 2-11, Rohan Talafair 2-10, Matthew Tooley 2-12)
