Young Players Dominate with the Bat

Walmley 5ths East vs Ambleside
Match Date: 6th July 2019
Type: Warwickshire County Cricket League Division 13 East
Location: Douglas Ground
Report: Darren Yeates

Saturday started out with rain and the covers on at the Douglas. Winning the toss, Walmley chose to field first, thinking the start would be delayed for rain, it started to brightened up and we started on time. With 5 overs gone the rain came back, covers back on and after 35 minutes played resumed. At this point, Walmley knew they’d lost 10 overs of their reply, and bowling out the opposition early was required to get some overs back.

A fabulous bowling and fielding performance ensued, with every bowler getting at least 1 wicket. Tight bowling by Ollie Williams (2-22) and James Dalton (1-28) early on started to build some pressure, but the game was turned on a first ball wicket for Sam Wood (2-18) playing his first senior game of the season, supported by Andi Walters (1-15). The innings was then finished off by Sami Hamid (2-21) and Ash Walters (2-5) including a superb caught and bowled. Having taken only 33 overs and bowled the opposition out for 115 walmley got 12 overs back and were chasing 116 off 47 overs.

The chase started badly losing a wicket first over, and some excellent bowling meant Walmley struggled to score 20 off the first 10 overs. A diligent performance from Andi Walters and 13 year old Michael Shackleford put on 34 with Dhruv Malhi (aged 12) joining Michael at the crease. They proceeded to dominate the rest of the bowling, running intelligently between the wickets amassing another 63 runs before Dhruv (36) was out with the score on 97. Michael Shackleford (48) was then out chasing a second run and falling just short of his first senior 50, the winning runs being knocked off by Calum Shackleford and Oliver Williams in 36 overs.

A fantastically entertaining game, played in great spirit with Walmley’s fielding and bowling providing the platform for some wonderful batting from two of the younger players in the club, Walmley running out worthy winners.
